Picture this: you walk into a new gym, the energy’s buzzing, but you feel like a fish out of water. Everyone seems to know what they’re doing, except you. The workout looks like something out of a superhero movie, and your brain is racing, thinking, “Where do I even begin?”
This is exactly why at Great Lakes we always start with our On Ramp program! Rather than throw you right into a class, we like to have our members go through 5 one on one sessions with a coach. Among other reason, here are the 3 big ones:
1. Movement Knowledge
No one likes to feel like they don’t know what they’re doing. We want you to know how to do the movements properly so you can walk in with some swagger. On the flip side of this, it’s also for the current members; we don’t want your coach spending 70% of the class teaching you from the base level how to squat, while ignoring the other members in class! Every class we try to give equal coaching to every individual in there, so when you’re a regular and are crushing it you can always expect to get the same treatment!
2. Scaling
Alright, so there’s a movement that’s pretty dang hard, that maybe you can’t do! (Pull ups, anyone??) So what can we do to move you in the right direction, get you a good workout, and work towards that skill!? Scaling is key! In the On Ramp sessions, we’ll not only teach you the movements but also show you how to modify them in class to keep progressing at your pace. This is how we make the workouts individualized for you and your goals!
3. The “Oh s!?*” moment
You get a little ways into a workout, and suddenly your lungs feel like they can’t get enough air. Muscles start to feel weird, and nothing’s working like it usually does. You look around at the rest of class, and no one else looks like they’re feeling this.\We call this the “oh s!?*” moment, and everyone has it. That moment where you realize something’s hard, and you gotta push through. First off, this is a very important part of the formula, because it’s where you prove to yourself that you can do hard things. Secondly, we want to make sure this happens in a private setting, because it can be a pretty vulnerable place to be mentally. And we want a coach focusing specifically on you to make sure you’re still moving correctly, you’re safe, and to help push you through.
At Great Lakes, we believe that your fitness journey should start with confidence, knowledge, and the right tools to succeed. That’s why our On Ramp program is designed to ensure you’re fully prepared before stepping into a class. You’ll master movements, learn how to scale for your personal goals, and most importantly, navigate those tough “oh s!?*” moments in a supportive, one-on-one setting. By the time you’re done, you'll feel like a veteran!
